Dr Joseph Mireku Asomaning had his secondary education at the Swedru Secondary School, Agona Swedru, where he obtained both ordinary and advanced level certificates (General Certificate of Education). He obtained Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Cape Coast and Master of Science (Seed Science and Technology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Seed Science and Technology also from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast. He was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship which took him to the Seed Conservation Department of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Wakehurst Place, Kew in the United Kingdom from 2005 to 2006 to receive training in Tropical Seed Research. Dr Asomaning is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Tree Seed Center of the CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana in Kumasi. He is the head of the Forest Improvement and Productivity Division of the Institute.

He is a member of the Seed Storage Committee of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) with the headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. He was a member of the Expert Working Group (EWG) engaged by the International Plant Protection Convention, Food and Agriculture Organization to draw guidelines on the international movement of seed (2009-003) in The Hague (Den Haag), Netherlands in July 2013.
